The American Design Club’s design for self defence exhibition- THREAT
A somewhat satirical, but equally valuable and beautiful exhibit of the best of self-respecting’ self defence is (appropriately?) running in Brooklyn, NY this month.
The additions, which came from 54 of the most exciting young designers, all mix an exquisite touch of design with a fistful of contemporary bite to fend off would be intruders.
1. Protection Chair by MeetSebastian - liberate any would-be defenceless kitchen chair with an etched slot for your Glock 17 to sit snuggly in just waiting to wreak havoc
2. Bat Rack by The Principals - doubling as a stylish coat hanger, the Bat Rack can be quickly turned on an aggressor. You even get to practise your swing with a satisfying installation method (points to anyone who knows the song in the video, I’m addicted)
3. One Shot Necklace by KNS Design Collective - A stylish and provocative way to stop the bullet heading your way from piercing your chest and burying itself in your heart
4. Last Stand table by EvanDublin - ever been sat at your dining table, drinking tea when a masked hudlum enters your home and your only means of defence is the solid oak of the table you’re sat at but you can’t pick it up to swing at them ‘cos your precious tea set is sat atop? Well now you can detach one leg, take aim and rest assured that your mums china will remain unscathed on the still-standing table
5. Take What You Want bag by Object Trust - For those passive members of society or for situations where none of the above suffice (confronted by The Baseball Fury gang) you can put your head in this bag, confess your submission, and be whisked off to the virtual serenity of the beach scene printed on the inner. You never know, the gang might have a sense of style and only steal the bag from your head…
For the rare situations where you’re under threat of attack, or for the more common situation where your sense of style and design know-how are under threat, these should be the self defence arsenal your arm yourself with.

They were doing it as well back then as they are today. Resource Furniture recently put this video together to celebrate the space saving design they’ve been pushing the limits of since the 50’s. In an age where it is increasingly relevant and demanded
Worth a watch alone to see Chaplin fall through a revolving wall Scooby-style or for the truly beautiful collapsable ottoman; discrete in it’s function as well as style

..especially when it is working proof of Dieter Rams’ eighth design principle; Good design is thorough, down to the last detail.
“Nothing must be arbitrary or left to chance. Care and accuracy in the design process show respect towards the consumer.”
A really nice site showcasing a collection of creative people, their bikes and what/how/why they make it happen.

The site features loads of companies, from Bristol (where the project began) to the far reaches of Europe where the cycles are as classy and good looking as the weather they face in the morning compared to us unlucky Brits. They all agree on one thing though; the space, fresh air and quiet down-time give us chance to breathe after work, both literally and creatively.

Really like the way the humble cycle is being integrated into the daily office workspace, not only as a more wholesome choice but as a bit of daily inspiration. One company (Poke - A London digital agency) tells of how they once cycled as a troupe of ‘BMX bandits’ to a local project workshop.
As H.G Wells once said:
“When I see an adult on a bicycle, I do not despair for the future of the human race.”

Natural Sound
A collection of design combining clean acoustics with cleaner materials. The third one amplifies your iPhone speaker with Maple wood and hollow space alone - reminding of us techniques in sound amplification we’ve trusted for centuries

A select few creative packaging examples from my recent browsing.
1. Medicom Pharma: Target Heavy Food
Always nice to have a bit of novelty and humour on a product there to make you feel better. I don’t think we see this nearly enough.
2. New York I love you, but you’re bringing me down
Old but still one of my favourites. I’d love to think you could learn serving sizes by referring to the Empire State; ‘I’ve had a terrible day honey, I’m gunna need a 40 floor portion of Carbonara tonight.’
